do laser printers use color when printing gray? Our HP Laserjet 1600 seems to run through color quickly?

We print mostly black in and rarely (5-10 pgs a month) in color in our office. HP eludes to color being used to produce grays

1. In many cases yes, your best bet is to set the print driver to print only in Black & White/Grayscale. When you've toggled this setting in the print driver the printer shouldn't be using any color toner at all.
2. Yes, colour printers will often use all toners. Especially lower end units.
