cleaning a laser jet printer?

I have an HP 1000 laser Jet and I'm getting black smudging top to bottom when I print. The printer works beautifully otherwise - does anybody know how to clean this printer? Or where I can get instructions on how? Thanks all!

  1. During the printing process, media, toner, and dust particles can accumulate inside the printer. Over time, this buildup can cause print quality problems, such as toner specks or smearing. here's how to correct and prevent these problems by cleaning the print cartridge area, the printer media path, and (if necessary) the pickup roller. Cleaning the print cartridge area It is not necessary to clean the print cartridge area often. However, cleaning this area can improve the quality of printed documents. WARNING: Unplug the power cord and wait for the printer to cool before cleaning the printer. 1. Unplug the power cord from the printer and allow the printer to cool. Open the toner door and remove the print cartridge. CAUTION: To prevent damage, do not expose the print cartridge to light. Cover the print cartridge if necessary. Also, do not touch the black sponge transfer roller inside the printer. Doing so may damage the printer. 3. With a dry, lint-free cloth, wipe any residue from the media path area and the print cartridge cavity. 4. Replace the print cartridge, and close the toner door. 5. Plug the power cord back into the printer. Cleaning the printer media path If toner specks or dots appear on printouts, use the HP LaserJet cleaning utility to remove excess media and toner particles that can accumulate on the fuser assembly and rollers. Cleaning the media path may extend the life of the printer. NOTE: For best results use a sheet of transparency. If transparencies are not available, use copier grade media (70 to 90 g/m2 or 18 to 24 lb) with a smooth surface. 1. Make sure that the printer is idle and the Ready light is on. 2. Load media in the input tray. 3. Click Start , select Settings , and click Printers . (In Windows XP, click Start and click Printers and Faxes .) 4. In the Printers folder, right-click the HP LaserJet 1000 printer icon and select Properties . 5. In Windows 98 and Millenium Edition (ME), click the Printer Properties tab, then click the Configure tab. In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, click the Configure tab. 6. Go to Cleaning Page , and click Start . The cleaning process takes approximately 2 minutes. Cleaning the pickup roller Try cleaning the pickup roller rather than replacing it. WARNING: Unplug the power cord and wait for the printer to cool before cleaning the printer. 1. Unplug the power cord from the printer and allow the printer to cool. 2. Open the toner door, and remove the print cartridge. 3. Find the pickup roller. 4. Release the small, white tabs on either side of the pickup roller, and rotate the pickup roller toward the front. 5. Gently pull the pickup roller up and out. 6. Moisten a lint-free cloth with deionized water or isopropyl alcohol, and scrub the roller. WARNING: Alcohol is flammable. Keep the alcohol and cloth away from open flames. Allow the alcohol to dry completely before closing the printer and plugging in the power cord. 7. Using a dry, lint-free cloth, wipe the pickup roller to remove loosened dirt. 8. Position the cleaned pickup roller in the pickup roller slot. NOTE: Circular and rectangular pegs on each side help to position the pickup roller correctly. 9. Rotate the top of the pickup roller towards the back of the printer until both sides snap into place. 10. Reinstall the print cartridge, and close the toner door. 11. Plug the printer in to turn it back on.
  2. You can clean it but it wont fix the problem. Does the toner smudge after it comes out of the printer? If so you have a problem in the fuser and no amount of cleaning will fix it. If the ink is blurred but doesn't rub off the page then you have a problem in the toner cartridge, change your toner.
