Why must Hp install all this POS software to be able to scan things?

My HP printer wouldn't let me scan something because "The correct software isn't installed". Bah. So I had to download 800 MB worth of HP software 90% of which is total crap and now it's taking forever to install everything. There's got to be a better way, no?

1. hey, hp sucks. get another printer. you can always scan with MS Paint by the way, you would be using your WIA driver and not the HP sortware so less functionality. hope that helps
