I need to replace my laptop battery- what battery can I use?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-1245dx, and my battery has degraded so much that I cannot use my laptop without being plugged in. My computer will sometimes shut down, saying that the battery capability is low to critical, and that I should replace it. My battery is a 10.8dvc w/ 8400mAh. My questions are: a) can I replace this battery with a 4400mAh, and b) would it be safe to buy a battery online via buy.com or somewhere besides the HP Parts Store (where the battery is $119)? Thanks!

  1. You can replace it with a compatible battery of the same VOLTAGE but same or different AMPERAGE. If you buy a cheaper battery, it may not be as reliable or safe as a genuine HP battery. You should be fine to buy a battery from any reputable retailer.
  2. I'd buy the battery in the shop, just to be safe. My battery is dying, but it can survive without a charger. I can imagine that being a pain! I'd highly recommend getting a new battery.
  3. As said the capacity i.e. the mAh will determine how long the machine will last on each charge. Batteries come in all grades, you will generally find a USA web site offers a warranty that you can rely on but the ebay china suppliers, who claim to be in the USA, generally will not honor warranty - take a hard look at the shipping and returns situation before parting with your money !   5. a: You can buy a 4400mAh battery but has lower capacity(only made of 6-cell compared to the extended 12-cell battery) and the battery can only support 2 hours also. However, It will reduce your bag's weight. b: You can get the battery for dv6-1245dx from any trust web sites. In fact HP also buy those batteries from lots of factories.
