Computer-Wireless or Not?

I have a computer that is a Dell and I bought it in Dec. 2005 from Dell. I was wondering if I should get a wireless and does that cost more & what else do you have to get for wireless? I have DLS. My monitor is fine as well as my key board. I mainly use a Computer for E-Mails & research. Once in a while letters to tenants in Word and that is about it & I print leases. The sales person with Dell said a 23 inch monitor (I have a 19 inch) would be the way to go and get wireless and that way I wouldn't have to clean the wires. I think I only cleaned my area 3 times in the years I have had this one. She said my HP printer would not be compatible either so I may as well get a new one and the cartage are cheaper for it . I think mine is 6 years old. I It is a 2410 photosmart all in one. I hardly ever use it. Another store I went to here told me all I need a a computer since my key board is fine and so is my monitor and they said my printer would be compatible. so all I would need is a tower. Which would would be the best way to go on this? Tower would be $400 plus tax with the store here and if I go with the sale rep at Dell it is $1,190 with a service plan. Just how much is wireless and what else do you need?

  1. You only need wireless if you are going to be moving this computer around (like a laptop, from room to room). If the computer stays put, a wire is better! Being wired is more secure from a security standpoint, and it is faster. It also has fewer connection problems (it's more stable). I checked support.hp.com and your 2410 photosmart all-in-one does have Windows 7 drivers so yes it will work with your new computer. When you get your new computer, just go to support.hp.com and you can download the drivers for free. Go with the $400 tower. That is all you need, unless you have PS2 connectors for the mouse and keyboard (round plugs) because sometimes new computers only have USB port. But in that case you can spend $35 for a new mouse and keyboard. Basically, the Dell representative was trying to sell you more than you need, and lied about the incompatibility with the printer.
  2. You Question is not Clear, Please describe what do you want to know clearly without mess pragraph.
  3. Wireless is convenient for portable devices, but there is no reason to use it for a fixed computer unless you REALLY want to avoid running new cables, and it sounds like you already have the connection in place. If you just want to add wireless access to use the internet from other gadgets, you can get a WiFi 'access point' to connect to a spare ethernet socket on your DSL router - or if you have a single-connection DSL box, you can get a combined Router + WiFi unit that will also give you the extra ethernet sockets. None of that requires you to replace your existing PC. I see no reason at all the HP printer would not be compatible with another PC; I think the sales person is just trying to get some extra commission...
  4. Ok Wirless???? I assume you mean laptop. Since you bought your computer in 2005 (almost 7 years ago) you should upgrade it. I would recommmed keeping the desktop or selling it and buying a laptop. You do not need wireless internet to use the laptop becuase you can plug an ethernet wire from the modem/router. The laptop would be easier to handle since there are no wires, and it wouldn't use as much electricity.
  5. if you go to cysco.com you can get a refurbished wireless adapter for around 20 bucks. you could still have your printer hooked up via the wire. if you need a router, you can buy one again at cysco( refurbished are fine). you might need a modem also, again from cysco(refurbished) . if there is wifi that you can receive, all you will need is the usb wireless adapter. if you need everything, no more than 150 bucks. contact the customer service at cysco. they helped me a lot.
