Removing HP Mini Battery?

I want to remove my Netbook's battery so that I can check to see if it's the same battery as the one I want to buy from the HP Online Store because I need to replace it. If I shut down my Netbook, take the batter out, examine it, and then put it back in the Netbook, that won't mess anything up on the Netbook, will it?
