1. Both cameras can be used to take great photos if you know exactly what you're doing. The Kodak is the most frequently cited brand for camera problems. Nikon makes great dSLRs. That can not be mentioned however with their point-and-shoot cameras. I recommend a Sony Cybershot. Very easy to use, built well and comes with lots of features.
2. Of your list I'd choose the Nikon. Too many horror stories on this forum about bad Kodak equipment. Don't even think about it.
