My computer says unsupported processor?

I recently bought an HP Pavilion p6500z. According to the website, the motherboard supports Phenom II quad-core 9xx processors. I decided to upgrade to a Phenom II 3.4 ghz 965, from a sempron 145 single core 2.8ghz. However, once I put in the Phenom, and booted the computer, it said "Unsupported processor installed computer will shut down in a few seconds" Why is it doing this? According to the HP website, and a reliable computer parts store I checked with, this should work. I could find no bios updates online, and if the motherboard is already compatible with the processor, should it need one? BTW the mother board is a M2N68-LA. Edit: the processor is a narra6. didn't know that made a difference at the time. So, it is a socket AM3, not an AM2.

  1. If HP and your computer store ARE correct then there is one of 3 problems: 1. you have a bad processor 2. There really is a bios update and you need to look harder 3. Perhaps a jumper config on your mobo needs changed. Of course there's always the likelyhood that the exact version of your mobo isn't really compatible with that processor.
  2. The 965 processor is socket AM3. Your motherboard is a socket AM2 ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c00906129#N94 ) Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades: Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 5600+ (up to 89 watt) Athlon 64 less than 4000+ Sempron less than 4000+ Don't know where you found that it supports 9xx processors. "Edit: the processor is a narra6. didn't know that made a difference at the time. So, it is a socket AM3, not an AM2." - You mean that the motherboard (not processor) is the narra 6 version. That makes a lot of difference. Now we see your problem differently. Yes, the 965 should work. I'd double check to make sure that the processor is seated properly and firmly. Then go in to the BIOS to see if it is reported properly in the BIOS. If all is well, then I'd contact HP and ask them "What's up?"
