Laptops- HP pavilion or Toshiba Satellite which is best?

I am looking to get a laptop quite soon, within next couple of months; and I am completely confused when it comes to what size RAM, hardrive,screen is best for who! I am a college student who hope to go on to university and I would be using this laptop for the next 5 years or so...
