Do color laser printers use the toner for other colors when only printing in black and white?
I know that inkjet printers use all colors to create black because of its different shades.

- You are soooooo WRONG!!! Inkjets have a black cartridge and do not "mix colors" to create black. Now for a laser printer... since the paper is white that is the white color you see... AND a laser printer also has black as a separate color.
- My color laser pribnter has 4 toners: Black, blue yellow, red. So, no, when printing in black it uses only the black toner.
- You are of course correct. Different shades of black can use the 3 colors (Yellow, Magenta & Cyan) to create them, especially in graphic images & photos, depending on the application being used & the color settings and descriptions used within the pictures. This goes for most all color printers. Basic black text usually only uses the black ink or toner, but depending on the printer setup and application being used, you can use the 3 colors in combination to print blacks. It is really dependent though on several things, so there's no solid answer as to which is being used at the time. Best of luck.
