Is the HP Photosmart C5140 printer the same printer as the HP C5180?

The C5140 is the one available at Wal-Mart stores. They seem to have same features, wondering if they are the same and if so, why they have different model numbers.

  1. Why would you ask such a question, if one is a C5140 and one is a C5180 they are obviously not the SAME!! One must have one or more different features than the other one does.
  2. Looks like according to the HP website that the C5140 was replaced by the c5180. There isnt any spec information on the c5140 and when you click on the page, it sends you directly to the c5180
  3. Please disregard the previous answers because they are both incredibly wrong. I am a HP representative. The reason that the HP website automatically directs C5140 searches to the C5180 is because the C5140 is a Wal-Mart exclusive model number and thus is not sold on HP.com. But the machines are the same. They are the same machine. Wal Mart and Sam's Club have different part numbers for their printers and other items as well. The reason they do this is because Wal Mart sells their printers for a slightly lower cost than the other retailers. Having a different model number prevents other retailers from price-matching Wal-Mart (for retailers to price match the model number has to be the exact same). Often, too, Wal Mart includes the USB cable whereas USB cables are not included with the printers sold at retailers (who charge $35 for one). If you note carefully, the printer is often referred to not as the C5180, but as a C5100 series printer. This would include C5180, C5140, C5130, or any other model number they could come up with in the C5100 number bracket. Here are some common misconceptions about the differing Wal-Mart part number, all of which are simply not true: - Wal-Mart printers are refurbished - Wal-Mart printers are made with cheaper parts - Wal-Mart printers don't come with ink Some retailer employees will say these things to prevent potential customers from buying the printer elsewhere. (If an employee does tell you this you can tell management, as lying is generally not approved in retail stores) In a nutshell, the C5140 is the same printer as the C5180 or any other C5100 series printer. The only difference is the part number and the price ;) . Here are some other examples of Wal-Mart model number changes: The F380 becomes the F335 The C4180 becomes the C4140 and so on. As far as the C5180 is concerned, it is the best all around printer (minus the fax) on the market. I have this printer and bought one for my mother and the photos great. As for the ink cartridges, look for the pack that has all 6 cartridges and 150 sheets of photo paper for between $35 and $45. Happy shopping!
