how long can a unused printer ink be good for closed?

I'm thinking about getting 2 Black Ink for my HP Printer and wanted to know if it would be a good idea to get two where I would use one and then when it runs out I have another one handy instead of having to go to the store again. I would keep the second one closed in its box.

1. While different brands and cartridges vary, you typically have 1 to 24 months to store your toner cartridge in a cool, dry, place. Watch out for moisture in these storage places though as it will highly factor print quality.
