What's the difference between chipped and non chipped ink cartridges for canon printers?
I'm needing to buy more ink for my canon pixma IP4700 printer and i have the choice of chipped or non chipped ink cartridges. What's the difference!? And can anyone recommend any sites to buy ink from for low prices? It's extortionate!

- One type has a chip, the other doesn't.
- A chipped cartridge has a small computer chip in it that communicates directly with the printer to reset the counter and allow you to print. Non-chipped cartridges do not have the chip. If your printer requires a cartridge with a chip it will not work without one. There are ink refill kits that include a small battery powered tool to reset the computer chips to avoid buying new ones. Look on eBay.
- A chp is required for the cartridge to work. WIth an unchipped cartridge you will have to affix and reset the chip from your old cartridges. Spend the extra couple dollars and buy the chipped.
- Smedrik is correct so is Trueteja who I do not know why someone thumbs them down that is so mean and petty as the answer is correct. As they both said without a chip the cartridges will not register in the printer and you have to transfer the chip from the one already in there onto the unchipped one. Buy the ones with the chips as Smedrik suggested as it will save you a headache. Chip transferring is not an exact science and if you damage the chip you will have to buy another chipped one. I agree ink is a rip of but we have to have at the end of the day.
