Why aren't Costco ink refills detected by my printer and computer?

I have an HP Photosmart C3180 printer. Buying new ink cartridges is very expensive so I went to Costco to try out their ink refill offer. I put the new cartridge in but when I check the ink supply on Microsoft Word, it says it's empty. Help? I've printed out test papers but those aren't exactly helpful because I would like to know the level of ink supply that I have.

1. Printer manufacturers have started using chips to determine if an ink cartridge is theirs or not. This may be your problem since a friend of mine had the same problem with a Costco refill. Take the refill back to Costco and tell them your problem.
