do printers usually start printing strange and erroneously in color when their low in color ink?

i got a Kodak ESP-3 printer and when I try to print in color I get this weird dark prints with what looks like a negative film image. Is this common for being low in color ink? I doubted that the indicator before was accurate just because sometimes the printer/OS says it is out of ink all together and then it'll show it has enough ink and print just fine. Thank-you for reading :)

  1. Yes. When printing, colours are made up of magenta, cyan and yellow. If the printer runs out of one of those colours, it will make things look very strange.
