Do digital cameras save a copy of photos, in addition to the memory card?

I am wondering if some digital cameras retain a copy of all photos taken in addition to the memory card? I discovered an area on my digital camera called "gallery" and it was an album of every photo ever taken on my camera included photos I had deleted from my memory card. Were these deleted photos from my memory card or my camera? My camera is a Sony DSC-N2 I am not referring to the software that came with my camera because the camera was the one on display and was actually missing the instructions, software and wrist strap when I purchased it.

1. That sounds odd. I'm not sure how your camera would have space for that. What brand and model of camera do you have?
2. You must be referring to the camera's software which you installed to your computer when you just purchased the camera. The gallery is most probably just a cache of thumbnails from previous and recent memory stick contents and did not get updated fast enough. No, there is no duplicate when you take a shot. It either goes to the memory stick or to the camera's internal memory if there is no memory stick installed. To create a duplicate, copy contents to a computer as early as possible. Deleted photos can not normally be recovered but Sony's memory stick normally comes with an instruction/warranty sheet (if original, fakes do not come documented) that includes a site for downloading a utility for recovering deleted files or formatted sticks.
