New Computer Help?

I'm looking for a new computer, not a computer PACKAGE that includes like a monitor and printer, I only need the COMPUTER and nothing else, I have the mouse, keyboard and all the stuff for it already. The computer I want should have a fast processor with multiple cores preferably Intel Quad Core or Duo. It needs to have a Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT or better and 4 GB of RAM. It should have Windows Vista premium or higher and a quick decent harddrive with atleast 300 GB. I would PREFER if it had Microsoft Office but I can by it separately. but now here's the tough part: I need a computer that I can buy at a retail store, NOT online. And I need the computer to be priced LOWER than $1300. I've found a HP computer that has everything I want and more for $1199: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10100503&catid= Should I get it? Is it available at the retail store? What other computers do you recommend for me?

  1. I know that this doesn't have everything you want but you should consider a Mac Mini. I'm sure you can custom order them at an Apple retail store.
  2. If in norush look here http://dealspl.us/ from time to time. Also try http://www.woot.com/ Tigerdirect has' bare bones systems And here http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=brph2fd&cs=04&dgvcode=ss&c=US&l=EN&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374
  3. Go to a store that builds custom computers. I would never buy a Dell, compaq, or HP ever. Find a reputable computer builder locally and tell them what you want. There should be no problem with your price range in a Duo Core, consider AMD over Intel.
  4. Ord is half right... His AMD comment is obviously the result of heatstroke, from standing too close to his CPU :) Your choice of processor boils down to what you intend to use the computer for- is it primarily for video editing, gaming, general web surfing and e-mail, programming? That HP is a nice general-purpose PC, but so-so for gaming. Go to a small computer store that builds custom generic systems, and get a quote for what you want. It will be at least 30% less than buying from a large retail chain like Best Buy or Circuit City. And you can get EXACTLY what you want. My recommendation for gamers is the Core 2 Duo E8400 or E7200 if you're on a budget. You're much better off with a fast Core 2 Duo and GeForce 8800/Radeon 3870, than with a Quad-Core and a lesser graphics card like a GeForce 8600/Radeon 2600. In your price range ($1300 or less) it can be done easily. Here's an example of what a local computer store's prices would be. This unit customized with MS Office home/student version and Vista premium is only $1100. Magic Micro is an online seller, but local computer stores will have similar prices for generic systems.
  5. HP computers are very good computers. I recommend Dell computers because their service is excellent. If something goes wrong in the first year, they will replace it free. I had a new keyboard and hard drive replaced with no charge within the first two years of using my computer (i have extended warranty). I heard Dell's are sold at Best Buy. It is worth looking into purchasing a Dell, comparing the pricing along with the hardware specs that you wish to have on your new computer.
  6. It isn't horrible, but t isn't great either. For that kind of moolah you can build a great machine that will plow that one underground. ...and you know that "fine" 8.1 onboard is gonna blow donuts. www.newegg.com Sounds like you are dead set on getting ripped off by a boxmaker, so I know this is falling on deaf ears, but build it yourself. Nobody is gonna know your needs better than you and nobody is gonna build one for you with more care than you will. It is NOT that hard. CPUs to look for...E6850, E8500, Q9450.
  7. What you can do is build your computer. It is very easy and you seem to know what you want. There are many sites out there but i recommend www.geeks.com. You choose the case, the proccessor, the motherboard, the ram, and the os(sold sepratley). YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS COMPATIBLE. you can look at the details on the product screen to see what it will work with. Most motherboards come with a power supply but if it doesn't you should get a 320v at least for your type. Building a computer is easy and fun:)
  8. No dont, i live in the UK so i cant reccommend retail shops local to you, but why do you have to buy from a local shop. Internet prices are the cheapest and most places would offer free delivery anyway... You seem to have a good idea on what you want your ultimate pc to do and how much u want to spend on it. Now let me get a spec for you. if i had that budget and you want it running smooth get this spec. Would you be willing to build it? You sound like you could but not sure. Please read below. Computer parts and components are the cheapest they have ever been so i would but all parts yourself instead of buying a made up one already. These are current UK prices so may be different when your buying them. You want a Q6600 or Q6700 both can be overclocked if wanted. The E6600 is more than the Quad but you dont get 4x The Power. Go for a 8600 GTS or 8800 GTS shed loads of good stuff will let you run anything at high res! If you want a HP pc that does your requirements look the other way no chance. Your best bet would be purchasing a new Dell XPS system that will have that spec. REMEMBER IF YOU WANT 4 GB OF RAM YOU WILL NEED A VERSION OF VISTA 64BIT ONLY TO RECOGNISE THE 4 GB. WINDOWS XP OR VISTA WILL WORK ON 4 GB BUT WILL ONLY RECOGNISE HALF OF YOUR RAM. SO NO POINT BUYING IT WITH 4GB IF YOU DONT WANT 64BIT. WINDOWS ULTIMATE BEST BET. If i was building one with that budget go for this.
