- Your desktop computer has to have a wireless adapter, USB or internal (in other words wireless network interface card) if you want to connect it to your wireless access point/router for Internet sharing or to another wireless computer.
- 1 Install the wireless network card in your computer. There are two types you can add: an internal card or an external USB adapter. The easiest to install is a wireless USB adapter because you don't need to open the computer case. 2 Boot up the computer. Once you log in, the computer should automatically detect the new device. If the wireless adapter manufacturer requires device drivers to be installed, insert the CD and run the device driver installation wizard. Step 3 Click the Start button. Right-click the "Network" icon and select "Properties." Click the "Manage network connections" option. 4 Right-click the "Local area connection properties" icon and select "Properties." This opens a list of protocol options for your wireless adapter. 5 Check the boxes labeled "Client for Microsoft networks," "File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks," and "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)." Click the "Install" button to load them onto the computer. Click the "OK" button. 6 Reboot the computer if prompted. For most setups, your wireless adapter should automatically detect the wireless network. If not, reboot the computer. You should see an icon in the taskbar that indicates your computer is connected to the wireless network.
