documents erased?

My daughter's documents keep being erased. She shuts it down and when she opens it in the morning She clicks on a document and a paragraph will show when she has written 50 pages! She saves everything that she writes. She is young so i don't allow her to connect to the internet on her computer. It is just for her to write her stores and draw. She has a hp and she hasn't even had it a year. I went into the computer and tried to find the rest of her file and i can't find it. Do you know how to retrieve the lost parts of her documents and also why is the computer doing this? Her writing is very important to her and i feel so bad for her when she spends so much time writing something only to find it gone. This has happened a few times with different documents. Some of them she hasn't opened in days and when she opens it they will be gone.

1. Can you simulate this problem or was it just a one off? If you can simulate the problem tell us exactly what program your using, how and where you saved the file and any error messages you recieve if any.
2. Open the software that she used to typed up the document, and click on file menu somewhere in it there might be recent document option try to see if that opens. If this does work, once it open "save as" the document to new folder.
3. Maybe try saving all of the work onto a memory stick, and working off there to prevent further problems? It worked for me when all of my ICT coursework kept going missing. I wouldn't know how to retrieve the work, unless if it was in the recycle bin, in which case, you right click on the document you want and click restore.
