Which toner should I use for a laser printer cartridge?
I want to add toner (the black ink powder) to the cartridge of my laser printer. Does it matter which toner I use, or does each brand has its own type of toners (with unique specs)? For example, if I take the toner out from an HP printer cartridge and place it in a Brother cartridge, will it work? Are toners universal?

- No, toners are not universal. Not only different brands, but different models within a brand use different types of toner. They all perform differently under different conditions. Now, I'm not one to tow the party line and tout the benefits of OEM toner at all times, but it really is important to purchase COMPATIBLE toners if you're refilling cartridges. Reputable refill companies typically provide toner that is manufactured by the same sources as the OEM stuff.
- Agreed. It isn't a good idea to add / mix toner from any cartridges regardless of manufacturer, or product type. You want to make sure you have the correct make & model of toner cartridge for your specific laser printer otherwise it will not work properly, if at all. You can certainly save money by buying compatible toner over OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) - but if you want to know more about the differences then check out the article below.
- They are not universal. Be sure to look up the appropriate cartridges online before buying these. I'd also recommend that you take a look at remanufactured toner cartridges. they tend to be much cheaper than brand new replacements and work just as well in my experience.
