- Off brand toner cartridges vary in quality and reliability. There are essentially 3 types of cartridges: New OEM (original equipment manufacturer) New Compatible and Refilled/recycled. New OEM comes right from the manufacturer and using this type of cartridge is the most expensive way to go, but they will work well and their yields will be generally what they claim. New Compatible is a completely new cartridge made to OEM specs but not made by the OEM itself. These are almost better than the OEM cartridge because they work like an OEM but cost a lot less. In the case of HP4000 series type printers, some New Compatibles actually have higher page yields and lower cartridge costs. Refilled/recycled are kind of hit or miss. Depending upon where you get them, they can be a great deal or a complete waste of money. It really depends upon the place you get it from. My company sells all three types of cartridges, and my team members would be happy to have a more detailed discussion with you on this topic. Art Flater
