What's the best laptop for me?

Hi, I've been wanting to upgrade to a laptop for a while, and since the Xmas sales are starting, I think it's a good time to think about it. I've never had one before, only a desktop, and it's a piece of crap, idk why, but it's an HP. So I have a few questions. Are HP laptops good? What brand is semi cheap but runs great? It'll be used for downloading music, music videos, using YouTube, playing MMORPG games, and other everyday websites like MySpace, etc, if it matters. I can't afford ones in the thousand dollar range though.. thanks for any help.

1. I can do pretty much that on a Dell Mini 9 with Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix installed as the OS.
2. yes get a hp i font know any models so go on thier website im pretty sure they are affordable and dont get a dell or gateway they suck exept for a few very expensive models
