How can I transfer data from my old HP laptop to my new Dell?
My old one is an HP Omnibook, and it pretty much died. I think the motherboard is fried. I *think* the hardrive is intact. Only one way to find out. I want to pull the HD out of my old HP, and set it up as an exterior slave to my new Dell laptop. Does anyone know the specifics on how I'd do this? The old laptop does *not* have a USB port. (Sorry, should have mentioned this at the outset).

- maybe the easyest way is to have a tech put a usb cable on it, like a reg external.
- Most laptops dont support two hardrives but you can use a product like this http://www.amazon.com/SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-500GB/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1261104422&sr=8-5 .
- go to a computer store and get a eSATA cable (assuming your HD is eSATA). You can plug your HD into the cable and you can plug it into your other computer via USB or Firewire. It usually requires a power source for the HD, but they usually provide it with the cable, since the USB isn't enough juice to get it spinning. But it works great. I salvaged the files off 2 hard drives from my dead computer just a few weeks ago.
- The whole thing should be pretty simple. You'll have to open up your old laptop and remove the hard drive. If you don't know how, you can try doing an internet search for your particular model. Once it's removed, you'll just have to purchase an external enclosure for the laptop (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=external+enclosure+laptop+hard+drive&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS251US251&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=4e0qS4eWKdLk8Qb87IWhBw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CEsQrQQwAg).
- Buy a 2.5 inch hard drive enclosure that connects to lap tops USB port and transfer the data. Link: http://www.frys.com/product/5807673?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
- Get yourself a external 2.5 hdd enclosure from here, they are cheap then you will have use of an external hard drive. you can transfer the files you need to the new computer, then format the old drive and use it for storage or install another operating system on it there are many uses it can be used for http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=2777&name=Hard-Drive-Enclosure This may be a better idea check it out see what you think http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276554&csid=_25
