Why won't my HP Deskjet 5400 printer install on my Windows XP operating system?

I got this printer for free. There was nothing wrong with it, but when they tried to put in an ink cartridge, they exploded it all over the inside of the printer, so they said you can have it if you clean it up. So it didn't come with the software. I downloaded the software off of the internet (from HP) and it came up with some error message that it couldn't find a file or folder or somehting. I don't remember exactly what the error was. "unInstaller setup failed to initialize. You may not be able to uninstall this product." I tried to install it a second time, and it worked. This was the only error message that showed up. However, I would still like to know why this error message is here and how to uninstall my printer if I ever want or need to.
