Help! Is there free software where I can scan my documents automatically?

I have an HP printer and I do not like their new Image Zone. They call it Photosmart. It's awful. Is there a free download where I scan my documents/pictures and it will automatically go the software? Thanks for any help! I loved the OLD Image Zone--it fit my needs! I have tried Kodak Easyshare--but I still have to go to the HP Solution Center and then transfer the images to the Kodak software. There was got to be an easier way.
