i hav a hp wireless printer and a hp laptop but cant get them to conect do i need a router?

1. well if you want to be able to access the printer wireless, yes you'll need a wifi router, but it depends on who supplies your internet on what sort of router you'll need since there is ADSL and Cable/dsl router on the market, so if your broadband goes via the telephone like BT etc.. you need ADSL router, but if you have virgin media you need cable/dsl router. i would advise getting a linksys or netgear router.

3. Using a router is easier but ... You should be able to set up an ad-hoc network between the printer and pc, you'd probably have to set manual IP address on the PC and the printer. There should be lots about it in the printer manual. or maybe just use a USB cable Good luck
