How can I find out if a laptop I purchase is a new one or a renewed one?

I intend to buy a laptop for my gf and I found a HP laptop that seems perfect for the job. The vendor told me it's brand new...Still Is there a way to find out if isn't? I ask because I know HP has that renew program where older laptops are re-manufactured and sold at smaller price with the same accessories and warranty as new ones.

1. HP will label thes as refurbished on the bottom of the laptop. If you're worried that the vendor is lying, make sure you have something written stating it is new. An email should suffice.
