What's the best printer for home which we rarely print?

I need to buy a new printer. We have a Lexmark and the ink dries out so fast. The problem is, we rarely use the printer, but we need it sometimes. Like maybe we print something once a month, usually for school. Other than that we never use the printer. I heard that laser printer's ink cartridge don't dry out, is that true? If so, then which brand of laser printer should I get? I know Canon and HP are the best in inkjet printers, but which brand is best for a laser printer. Thanks.

  1. If you don't print often stay away from ink-jet printers. Ink-jet printers need to print almost everyday to work correctly, the nozzles clog up if not used frequently. You need a laser printer, it will work fine even if you print once a month (the powder won't clog/dry up) As for which brand, it depends on what you can afford/want. Do you need multi-color or black & white? Cannon's and HP's are good, stay away from Samsung, take a trip to the store and see which brand/model fits your budget.
  2. Go with HP or Canon; they both make good laser printers. Laser "ink" is called toner and is a black powder that is melted onto the paper by a fuser (heated drum). The toner can last for years without degrading.
  3. Get a Laser printer, it uses toner [powdered ink] and will not dry out or clog the nozzles. I have a Samsun CLP-300 which is great. I got it on sale for $128.00
  4. You're right about avoiding inkjets if you print rarely. If you dont need color you can get a black laser in the $50 range. I have a Brother HL2040 going on 3-4 years now still going strong. If you need color look at the Samsung CLP-300. There are 5 of these in my extended family. We paid under $100 each new delivered. The last one we got off ebay for $96. We bought an extra set of 4 toner cartridges for $50 from http://www.ccs-digital.com and just replaced the first black on the oldest and most used printer after a year, so they do last for the 2,000 pages Samsung claims. The print is sharp and fast.
