1. I'm not sure that I truly understand your question. Firstly, there are many cameras from many manufacturers. While Canon is often considered the best, or at least a very good manufacturer, that's not to say that every camera from Canon is better than every camera from every other mfg. It's a fiercely competitive environment, and some manufacturers have added features, capabilities and style at a price that you may prefer over a Canon or a Sony. Canon (and this applies to all manufacturers) makes low priced lines of cameras that lack capability, but are targeted at the low priced market. and, since Canon and Sony tend to get a premium price for their 'brand', you'll often find a better camera at the same price from Panasonic or Fuji (or others). 2. The best site for your camera answers is dpreview. www.dpreview.com Plenty of official reviews and user reviews for the vast majority of cameras out there. I like SONY myself.
3. Check out your local library. Periodical section. Consumers reports. They will have what you're looking for. I have a Kodak Easy Share and I love it.
4. While dpreview's comparisons are based on their pro level reviews, they do have a forum where digital camera users can talk about their likes and dislikes of various cameras. There is a site called Nikonians that discusses Nikon cameras and photo.net's Canon board, so I am sure there is one out there that discusses other brands as well.
