- Check out dpreview.com you can compare the ones your interested in side by side on a chart to determine for yourself the differences. They also have photo samples and more
- the rebel line of canon digital SLRs are aimed more towards beginners and are generally lighter, more compact, and built weaker the D40 and D50 are bigger, heavier, and built much better, the inner workings of both cameras are more or less the same, they share the same sensors image processors, and lenses.
- The Rebel series is basically a name for the lower level consumer - prosumer cameras, and everything else is prosumer - professional quality. I own the Rebel T1i, which is highest level Rebel series camera, and around $900. The sensor is basically taken out of the prosumer/professional 50D, but $3-400 less, with the addition of HD shooting.
- Hi, Canon name their cameras with 1, 2 or 3 numeric digits: 500D, 50D, 5D. The more digits, the more amateur the market at which the camera is aimed. So a few digits, 1Ds for example, is a pro model, 50D is a high-end amateur model, and 500D is an entry level model. The main differences are image quality, HD video or not, and an array of "custom functions" which allow the photographer to define just how the camera behaves under certain circumstances. There are other differences which, actually are rather small in terms of affecting the final image quality, but are great marketing tools! In the US, and other markets, the numbers of the lower spec models give way to a pretty confusing series of letters - but you did not ask that! The 500D is $500, the current 1Ds model is $9,000 - so actually, less is more! Cheers Charles
