Are there any printers that work even when one color is not full?

I have a brother printer with scanner and fax also. But if one of the colors is empty then the nothing would work. The only way to make it work again is to buy that color. What can i do? Are there any printers that even if i don't have blue or yellow, i can still use the black??? Thanks! i read the article about the ink heads being damaged if used without an specific color. But what about the scanner?? That has nothing to do with the actual ink???

1. We have a Canon printer which keeps working even if it is out of colored ink - but it's about 5 years old, so I can't tell you if all new Canons are still like this.
2. There's a very good reason why you need all the colors. When people take their time to replace a missing color, they end up destroying the printer.
