HP Pavilion Laptop freezing and booting to blank screen.?

I have a HP Pavilion Laptop about 4 years old. It's starting to freeze without much programs running. And when I boot it up- it stops at a black screen. I have to wait about 10 minutes and boot again. Does it need another hard-drive or is it time to get a new laptop.

1. First thing, try taking the battery out, unplugging the machine, and press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, maybe a minute. If that doesn't cure the machine, I'd try reinstalling your OS. If you still get problems, you'd be better off getting a new laptop instead of a hard drive, but you could replace the hard drive if you really wanted to keep the computer.
