Hooking up and adding an ethernet HP 8550n color laserjet printer.?

I just bought a used HP laserjet color printer 8550n. I am trying to connect my laptop to the printer and have the ethernet cable, but am having major issues getting my documents to print. I have gone to hp.com and downloaded drivers etc... but nothing seems to work. I have tried adding a printer on my wizard, again nothing. I am getting really confused, I do not have a disk to load. Just trying to set up this printer to work from my laptop. Does anyone have any advise for me to get this printer working? I probably need to start from scratch, just need to be guided all the way now! I have windows xp loaded on my laptop. Is it easier to load vista and let it configure itself? I have a linksys router already for my wireless internet.

1. You must have a router. Cannot just plug the ethernet cable in and expect ito work. Signal has to come from somewhere. Your ethernet cable goes into your desktop or laptop and there is no out for it to go directly to your printer so you need a router to go in and then out.
