using a remote control with a hp pavilion laptop?

i bought a hp pavilion dv5 laptop and there was a remote control with it. i can't seem to be able to work it, i tried checking help and support, the instruction manuals, but there wasn't anything useful in them. can anyone help out? the remote is a IR (infrared) one and i have tried pressing the various buttons many times but no response on the laptop. the battery is new though.

1. I have a HP Pavillion that came with a small remote as well. Mine uses a battery. Maybe that's the problem? Change batteries?
