What is the fuction of the S/PDIF jack in the HP Pavilion dv series laptops?

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC, and it has 3 jacks on the front of the laptop, a mic jack, a headphone jack, and an SPDIF jack. Does anyone know what exactly the SPDIF jack does?

1. It's for digital audio so you can copy tracks from your minidisc for instance with no loss of quality
