HP Store Online

Whether I have a warranty or not is HP responsible for exchanging two defected 256 MB memory sticks?

I have an HP Pavilion a815n (PS512AA) Desktop. Just recently, under HP PartSurfer my memory sticks needs to be changed. It says “256MB, PC3200, unbuffered DDR-SDRAM DIMM REQUIRES RETURN OF DEFECTIVE PART” and that the new part # is: DC468AX is the “New part for P8670-69002”. I never upgraded or replaced any RAM. It's still the way it is when i first bought it. I talked to someone at the Parts Department and they didn't have an answer for that. Then they transferred me to the tech-support department and they weren't aware of the situation and they re-transferred me to the HP store. And the guy gave me a number basically to the Spare Parts Warehouse (877-253-8898). and when i called them, they said that my RAM costs $43. It was a whole fiasco and it was completely insane because I'm on the phone for like 2 hours waiting for further instructions. This is the website I went to: http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partlist&model=PS512AA&HP_model=PS512AA&modname=Pavilion+a815n+(PS512AA)&template=main&plist_sval=Memory&plist_styp=subcat&dealer_id=&callingsite=&strsrch=&keysel=Memory&catsel=%3F The type of RAM i need is a 256 MB; DDR-SDRAM 3200; 400mHz. If someone can please help me out that would be great. In my opinion, i really think that this is considered a product recall. I can't even buy the RAM either. I know that my best bet is to buy it off like Amazon or E-bay. Any other questions just reply and i frequently follow up or drop an e-mail to me. Thanks.

  1. When you have warranty, they replace.
  2. usually theyll replace it if its within the first year of purchase cuz it has an automatic warranty. go to the HP website and get the customer service number so you can ask, usually theyre open 24 hours
  3. If they ain't paying for it, they ain't paying for it.
  4. Warranty is required for all exchanges. I think you are MIS-READING the website. It says that "IF" the memory is defective, then the customer must return it for exchange. This is NOT a recall, but the reference to updated part numbers for use when a replacement is needed. Is your memory defective??? If not, don't worry about it. If it is defective, try www.crucial.com or www.pricewatch.com to find some low cost DDR memory.
  5. You'll need to read the warranty information from your purchase. The warranty may be through HP or it might be from the point of purchase (i.e. WalMart, Target, BestBuy, etc...). I also noticed that some of the documents surrounding that model were listing with a date in 2007 so you may be outside of a traditional warranty period anyway. If your product is under warranty, go through the warranty number on the receipt or brochure that was included with the receipt. The Parts Surfer application seems to be provided as an easy way to locate HP parts for a particular make/model of computer but not necessarily integrated into the warranty department. If out of the warranty period, don't buy your memory from HP. Go through one of the online retailers that have a memory configurator wizard and get your memory that way. The retailers will sell memory that they certify to be compatible with your system.
  6. RAM is relatively inexpensive. Also most manufacturers offer a life time guarantee. Check with the manufacturer of the RAM to find their policy. Go to http://crucial.com and, scan with their tool. It will tell you what you have and, suggest upgrades. You don't have to buy from them. I suggest http://newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000147&Description=DDR-SDRAM%203200&name=Desktop%20Memory
