is it possible to buy an HP laptop without an OS?
I am planning to get myself a laptop within the next one month. Is it possible to buy a HP Pavilion series notebook without an OS (in India)? If not HP, which other company offers notebooks without OSes? I really hate Vista and wish to use Linux. Thanks in advance.

- when you buy a premade pc, they come with an OS installed. you can still reinstall Linux over that without a problem, you will just have an unused copy of whatever came with the pc. sell it if you feel like it.
- You can get a laptop from most of the manufacturers with pre-installed Linux too. Actually they are cheaper than Windows installed laptops. Check HP Pavillion DV4000 Go there: http://www.linux.org/vendor/system/laptop.html
- the whole point of the "premade" computers is that everything is set up and ready to go. they also tend to use a lot of proprietary hardware devices, which may or may not have drivers in linux. the best way to do it is to buy a desktop piece by piece. you get exactly what you want, it's cheaper than a laptop, and usually comparable to the cost of other desktops, and you get to select exactly what is installed on it. of course you can just format the laptop as soon as you get it, and install anything you like. don't expect any support from the manufacturer tho.
- In our place, most shops sell various laptops without an OS pre installed on it. It cost less because you don't have to pay for the OS.
