How do I fix a loose IDE cable?
I occasionally get an error on my laptop upon booting and I suspect a loose IDE cable could be the culprit. The problem is, my notebook is an HP Pavilion and I'm not sure if I can personally access the inside to check if that's the problem. Any way I can check the part, or will I have to take it to a store?

- Pretty unlikely that it is loose. It would generally work or not work at all. If you are having intermittent problems, your hard drive could be dying. Back up your data. Could also just be a software problem (unless you are sure it is hardware). However, check on eBay and you can buy a new cable for most any laptop. Usually just a very small cord (if there is a cord at all). Couple of screws to get to it. Get a shop to do it if you aren't comfortable.
- Take out the battery, press the power button for 10 seconds. Take out all the screw on the back and crack the machine open. Take a small flat head screw driver and pop out the clip holing the cable in and pull out the cable and replace it then reinstall the clip.
- You most certainly can open it by removing the screws from the bottom of the laptop removing the keyboard and top cover and now you can access the MOBO. the only thing is that you can possibly void the warranty by doing this. When I take a laptop apart I make a map on a piece of paper to remember where the screws go.
