digital cameras compare: canon digital rebel xsi vs. leica v-lux 1? are they even comparable?

i'm not sure if these two cameras are even comparable. basically i'm a beginning photography student in the market for a digital camera. i know leica has a long and reputable history, so that's why i was even considering getting it. so the other one i wanted to get was the xsi. i'm not even sure if they are comparable? are they? i'm not sure the leica has interchangeable lenses and i don't think it has some features that the xsi offers. don't be condescending please, just answer the question. THANKS:)

  1. No, these two cameras are not really comparable. The XSi (450D) is a digital SLR with a large sized CMOS image sensor. And, the Leica V-lux 1 is more of a point & shoot camera with12x optical zoom and RAW capability, but has a very small sized CCD sensor (which means very poor ISO capability). It's essentially the same as the Panasonic DMC-FZ50 (it features their Venus III engine). Leica is a great name, but Panasonic? forget it. A dSLR camera with a large sensor will ALWAYS have much better ISO capability than a camera with a very small sized sensor, as well as better overall image quality and performance. The XSi is a great camera, but lens choice is very important if you want the best in image quality. If looking at dSLR cameras, I recommend you look at either Canon or Nikon. good luck...
