Photo and color printers - why does the print quality and color get bad after a a year?

I have two color/photo printers. They print amazingly crisp pictures initially then it deteriorates in a year or so. Why is that? Did the settings get screwy or is it just time to throw out?

1. the print cartridges need replacing. If they're new, then it might be the printer itself.
