HP Store Online

how to go about with a new hard drive for laptop?

i have to get a new harddrive for my laptop. I got it for free and there is only a hole where the harddrive is. i am wondering what i need to know to get a new one. parts etc. i have already contacted hp and had a giant run around with that. They only gave me some part numbers for their store and prices and for what i want they would sell a 80gb harddrive for 250. wtf. so i am looking for a different place that sells harddrives. but i don't know what kind are compatible with my nx9010 compaq. and then i hear that i need a contector kit? what is that, and where could i get that? by the way it was 80 mb that i was trying to get at hp for 250 i can get that much cheeper some where else

  1. They were trying to screw you. Try newegg.com. Look up your model. You should get an idea of what you need.
  2. sounds like a load of bull to me. the thing to know is whether your laptop is PATA(IDE) or SATA, then just get a notebook drive (2.5" as compared to desktop drive 3.5") and it will work. from some quick research i did i think it is SATA. buy one, whack it in. simple.
  3. Hi, Pleae visit the following website, this will give you a more detailed information the the type of hardrive you should be looking for. http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP-Compaq,nx9010,Laptop,Hard-Drives.aspx you can just purchase a IDE ATA hard drive. you don't need an encluser. if you want to use it as external hardrive then you will need an encloser. All the encloser does is convert your SATA or Serial ATA or EDE to USB and puts it in a nice box for you. so all you have to do is plug it to a USB port on your machine. but it looks like you are looking for an internal hard drive. you should look for internal HD any brand could work.
  4. Read, "Obviously you were told about the biggest HDD which *HP* sells." http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1059224 Specifications are here: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11599_na/11599_na.HTML According to the specifications, it is an Ultra ATA drive, not a SATA one! Of course: a 2.5" HDD
  5. My advice is to CAREFULLY remove the hard drive from your notebook and get the type of hard drive it is. For example if the connector is flat and about two inches wide you have an ata drive. If not then you likely have a SATA drive. Once you have this information you can go to a site like newegg.com and find a drive that suits you and your budget. From personal experience you can get a much larger drive than 80gb for far less than 250.
