HP Store Online

my computer is running slow...Help PLEASE!!! I've tried many things?

my computer (especially internet) is running kind of slow. I have internet through my cable company (high speed) and it used to go faster awhile ago. i have done things such as clearing temporary internet files and cookies stored locally under documents and settings, going to internet options and deleting the files under that as well as going under settings and viewing the files and deleting them. I have gone under C:\Windows\Prefetch and deleting everything in the folder (but not the folder itself) I have also done a disk clean up through Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Clean Up. I dont know how to clear the cache (or where to find it) of ALL internet pages EVER visited. I have AVG, Zonealarm firewall as well as windows firewall. i have an HP pavilion 310n with Windows XP SP2 if there are any other ways to clean it up or make it run faster i would greatly appreciate your knowledge!! I have also done msconfig.exe under run and changed startup programs already.

  1. do an online scan at bitdefender, its free, it can detect and remove any virus, that may be undetected by avg
  2. You have already done all the basic things which is fine. Check your RAM and clear some space in the drive in which you have installed your OS.
  3. I don't think your computer is infected with a virus. The problem may be that you have low memmory on your computer which could cause your computer to run slowly. I recommand reinstalling windows or removing extra programs (etc.) from your system.
  4. First, turn off Windows firewall. You should only have one firewall running. Having more than one can cause issues. Zonealarm is superior to Windows firewall so turn off the Windows firewall. Download Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html and Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/ Install them, update them, then run a scan. Next download CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Install and run this; there are two parts to CCleaner. One cleans stuff left behind by web browsing and software, the other cleans up the registry.
  5. I think you've done enough already. If it's still slow, consider installing more RAM. Also, try defragmenting your disk and uninstall software that you don't really use.
