anyone experience problems with kodak digital cameras?

we've bought several, and really like the technology/options/transfer software. however they don't seem to have much of a lifetime. mostly the shutters stops opening, and no matter how sharp the batteries are, no dice. anyone else out ther have this problem, and have advice? or recommendations for another brand in the same price range ... <$200
