Which laptop is the best for Chemical Engineering majors, Macbook Pro or HP Pavilion dv9912nr Notebook PC?
I'm in my Sophomore year in college as a Chemical Engineer student and I plan to get a Master's Degree as a Chemical Engineer. My dad just bought me an HP Pavilion dv9912nr Notebook PC for school. I'm wondering if this computer is a good computer to be used for my major. When I went to the Apple store, the sales people told me that the Macbook Pro would be very useful for me when I'm doing equations and graphics for the degree I"m studying in. Now, I don't know if I should return the HP laptop and get a Macbook Pro or just use the HP laptop. Thanks to those that reply!

- any computer is good at doing equations and stuff, its the time that matters. id suggest you stick to the HP as the university might hand out PC-only software for the class. remember, never buy something based on what a sales person says, as a sales person's job is to persuade you to buy, they really dont care if it really works for you, they sometimes hide the downsides of something and exaggerate the good stuff
- If I were you I would ask one of your profs what would be the best option, Mac or PC. That is a nice computer and should do everything you need. Macs are a pretty large learning curve if you have never used one before and just starting your major is not the time to be fiddling trying to learn a new computer system. Stick with the HP unless your profs specifically suggest Macs are much better. And yeah, the Mac sales guys are desperate to sell more and more... just think of all the commercials you see for them lately, don't trust sales guys.
- I have an hp dv9000 series 17" and I love it. They go for about $750 with 4gb of ram. Mac notebooks with the same features cost 4 to 5 times as much and are more cumbersome to use. Years ago, I wanted a Mac but their operating system and windows have changed so much that I now prefer Vista. Macs today are not what they were 5 or 10 years ago. I run several Adobe apps at the same time on mine for web design. Like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash Professional and Illustrator.
