Is it possible to have your laptop recognize another brand of AC adapter?

I recently purchased an HP brand laptop power adapter because it was on sale for very cheap at circuit city. It powers my Dell laptop fine, but it will not charge the battery. Is there anything I can do to get my computer to recognize the HP power source?

1. No, there are no settings on your computer that will help recognize an A/C adapter. You should also make sure that the voltage/watts are the same as your computer requires(not more/less). You don't want to break anything, so be very careful in what power source you are using. As for your battery being charged, they are really designed to only work with their A/C adapters.
