"Already-supplied" black toners that come w/ laser printers: Approx # of pages they do before buying new one?

I have heard that when you buy printers (either laser or inkjet), the cartridge/toner that they give you isnt the full sized version. Yesterday I bought the Samsung CLP-315 (its a laser printer). http://www.trustedreviews.com/printers/review/2008/09/16/Samsung-CLP-315-Colour-Laser-Printer/p1 So im assuming that the toner will not last as long enough I do know that toners for laser printers are supposed to last for a long time, though. Can anyone give me a rough estimate as to how long (or, how many pages approximatey) can i get out of the black toner that already comes with the product? A normal full-sized black toner is supposed to do 1000 pages of text (I called the Samsung helpline yesterday). To make a sensible estimation, am i along the right lines to say that the already-supplied black toner will last me 500 pages? I don’t even know if the toner theyve given me is smaller-sized or whether it is in actual fact the real and full-sized thing. I did open up the printer and quickly had a look. The reason why im asking is because i originally bought this laser printer so that i can sit in my room and keep printing off draft copies of my university project (It saves me having to travel into uni every day to use the printer there). Im a bit worried now, though, because knowing my luck, after printing off draft copies of my essay. i bet the toner will run out the day before i have to hand in my work... Please can someone help me :( and if you know anything about laser printers please can you write something just so that I am put at ease!! Thanks for all the responses so far. I have looked and this is what it says on the black toner: CLT-409 (Series E) UNIT - DEVE BLACK S/N: CNE1JC9604755ABP3AQAP1990 So im assuming CLT-409 (Series E) is the part number. I FOUND THE ANSWER! I called them up. They said that the already-supplied toners contain 1/3 ink, so I should be able to get approx. 700 pages (when printing at 5% coverage)

  1. I have a Hewlett-Packard laser printer that is ten years old and still on the cartridge that came with the printer. I don't print things very often, though. It all depends on how much you use it, obviously.
  2. Half of the regular amount is a good rule of thumb. To be on the safe side, though, when you buy a new printer, you should **always** get a new regular toner cartridge (or a set - whichever it takes) along with the printer, because you really don't know how long the cartridge(s) furnished with the printer will last. I would go ahead and get a new cartridge as soon as possible, to prevent a situation like the toner running out at midnight the night before you have to turn a paper in at 8:00 in the morning. Good luck and hope that helps!
  3. You can find out by looking at the part number on the toner in your machine and comparing it with the part number of a replacement. On my HP laser the two were identical and I got full use from the installed toner. As far as the number of pages you get are concerned, be aware that it depends entirely on the amount of toner you deposit on a page, so pages with photos and complicated graphics use up toner more rapidly than pages with sparse text. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) have a procedure with a test page, see http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/articles/us/en/MonoLaserJetYieldArticle.html The test page has something like 5% coverage.
