I want to replace my HP power supply that blew. ?
Does the unit have to be HP or are there other makes that will suffice but are cheaper? The part number is HP 5188-2859. It typically ranges from $33-$40. Is it even a good idea to find another brand or should I just stick with this HP model? Thx peeps. With the HP power supply I blew, how do I know what other models will work, such as an Antec Earthwatts? What would be the equivalent model of an HP 5188-2859? What is the basic info needed for this and all power supplies so I can bargain shop?

- Any brand will do. Just ensure the wattage is at least the same and the connectors are similar.
- This is a 400W power supply. Your new power supply should be at least 400W and also the same size so it can fit into your case.
- Any brand will do as long as the voltage and amps are the same. You can probably find a good price for one on ebay.
- name brand isn't a big deal, power supplies for dif. brands are usually different shapes, make sure the one you replace it with fits in your tower and screws in, that's why sticking with the same part keeps it simple. When mine blew on Dell, I swapped it with a thriftstore one for 5 bux. worked fine but had to be creative mounting it in tower.
- It is never a good idea to buy a cheap power supply. The last thing you want is your motherboard to blow as well if and when you are hit by a surge or a brown. That said, HP uses a very cheap brand of power supply to begin with You would be better off finding an Antec Earthwatts power supply.
