How to make my HP Pavilion laptop charge the new battery?

My original battery for HP Pavilion DV2000 died after 1,5 years of using (it didn't work without AC power more than 5 minutes). Thus, I decided to buy a new one, with extended capacity (12 cell). The problem is that my laptop doesn't want to charge the new battery, saying that it "plugged in, but not charging". Who knows how to fix this?
