Opinions on the best digital cameras right now?
My mother needs a new digital camera. She liked her old one (Canon PowerShot SD800) but it is broken. She'd like an upgrade. Anyone have opinions or preferences on the latest cameras? She'd like to stay with Canon, but not necessary.

- The Canon SD770 is an excellent camera for about $230.00. It is very easy to use...turn it on and it is ready to go with high quality photographs...point and shoot, finished!
- Depends on how much you want to upgrade. The canon powershot ELPH line (she has one of these) has a variety of cameras to choose from, and she can upgrade within those. I know a lot of people who use them, and they are quite nice. However, if she plans on staying with 'pointnshoot' cameras, canon only offers that one line. If a bigger upgrade is preferable, you can look at SLR cameras. Nikon and Canon are the two best camera brands to look at. SLR's range from a very basic D40 (or the canon equivalent) to the $2000 thing I can't remember the name of. I think a good upgrade would be either one of the top ELPH cameras, a SD 950 or 990 (remember, the higher number doesn't necessarily mean better!) , or she could look the advanced powershot collection. They're sort of a hybrid of SLR and pointnshoot, perfect for people who aren't really serious hobby sort of photographers, but want a high quality camera/photo. It really depends on what she wants to do with the camera. Look around the canon site as well, they have lots of information all all their cameras.
- If she wants an higher-end compact, consider recommending the Canon G10 to her. It is one of the best compacts out there at any price. The panasonic lumix lx3, however, rivals the Canon G10 in a lot of aspects and even surpasses it at high iso image quality.
