can i get a power supply for my laptop if it is not from hp?

the power supply on my laptop computer wich is an HP lance armstrong edition L2000 about 2 years old is going out on me it has a couple shorts in the wires. im wondering if i need to go through hp to get a power supply for it or if i can go to a local computer retailer and get like a universal type for it.

You should be able to get a universal type for it. I did for my HP DV6000 laptop
Yes, just make sure the amps are the same and voltage and connection.
yeah my power supply went for my laptop and you can get a charger with all the different fittings and the plug when i got mine it was around £40 it may be different if you live in the USA but i got mine from PCworld

If your looking for something that will last I would buy one from HP with a warranty.
Go to Target, Walmart or Best Buy and look for a Targus universal power adapter, they come with different size tips and can connect to almost any laptop. Only problem is universal ones are more expensive, like $99. The HP replacement may be cheaper. Some of the universal power supplies are hit and miss. Either they don't have the necessary tip (& you have to order it, if available), and reviews of some brands say they break easily. I don't normally recommend eBay, but in this case, you can find new or used ac adapters that are the exact model, so you know it's compatible. If the seller is good, it'll be tested and guaranteed to work. I just got one for $30 as opposed to getting one directly from Gateway for $90+.
